Chuson-ji Temple

Chuson-ji is the head temple of the Tendai Sect of Buddhism and is one of the three main temples of the Oshu Sanjusan Kannon (33 sacred places of worship). The temple was founded by Fujiwara no Kiyohira and is known as a temple associated with the three generations of the Oshu Fujiwara clan.

It is particularly renowned for its many cultural assets, including Konjikido, a magnificent example of Heian-period arts, crafts, and architecture.

The precincts of Chuson-ji Temple are designated as a Special National Historic Site and are registered as a World Heritage Site as one of the components of “Hiraizumi - Architecture, Gardens and Archaeological Sites Representing the Pure Land of Buddhism”.

Chuson-ji Temple, along with Motsu-ji Temple in Hiraizumi, Zuigan-ji Temple in Matsushima, and Risshaku-ji Temple in Yamagata, make up the “Shi-ji Kairo” pilgrimage route.

It is said that Ennin founded Sekizan Kodaijuin in Kasho 3, but this is not supported by historical records.

The actual founding of the temple is said to have begun in the early 12th century, when Kiyohira Fujiwara built the “Taho-ji Temple” enshrining Shakyamuni Buddha and Taho-no-Nyorai Buddha.

Chuson-ji has over 3,000 national treasures and important cultural properties. Among them, the decoration of Konjikidō (Konjikido) has a majestic, arts-and-crafts-like appearance because of the craftsmanship of the late Heian period, including the white luminous shell work, openwork metal fittings, and lacquer maki-e (lacquered lacquer).

It is said that Kiyohira built Chuson-ji Temple to comfort the spirits of those who died in the wars of the late 11th century and to build a peaceful ideal society.
