Kakko-ya’s Kakko-Dango, a teahouse founded in 1907, is known as a specialty of Genbikei Gorge for its unique method of selling dango that crosses the Iwai River.
Located in the beautiful valley of Genbikei, the store is on the opposite bank of the river across the stream.
Visitors put money in a basket hanging from a rope at the pavilion, tap a piece of wood with a mallet, and the basket is smoothly pulled up, and the dumplings and tea they ordered are placed in the basket and come down to their hands.
This scene is known as “flying dango” and has become a specialty. It is said that the technique by which the tea in the basket also arrives without spilling is the result of many years of experience.
There are three types of dumplings: an-dango, sesame dango, and mitarashi dango, with five dumplings stuck in each basket.
Take a break with dango and tea while admiring the beautiful valley.
Along with the traditional sales method, a wooden statue of the first founder, Torikichi Chiba, welcomes you to the store. Enjoy the feast of flying dango with the beautiful scenery of Genbikei Gorge.
