The Miyamori River Bridge, affectionately known as the “Megane Bridge,” is known as the motif of writer Kenji Miyazawa’s masterpiece “Night on the Galactic Railroad,” which creates a fantastic view of the world.
There were two generations of the Miyamori River Bridge. The old bridge was completed in 1915, and was renovated in 1943 to become the present bridge.
Before the renovation, it was used by the Iwate Light Railway, the predecessor of the Kamaishi Line, and three piers of the old bridge, made of stone, are still in existence.
The bridge piers are an arch structure with five semicircles in a row, and its appearance is just like a pair of glasses. Visitors can feel as if they have stepped into a story while viewing a landscape reminiscent of Kenji Miyazawa’s works.
At dusk, the lights are illuminated, inviting the viewer into a world of fantasy. The romantic scenery has become a topic of conversation, and the area has been recognized as a “holy place for lovers. There is also a monument in the vicinity.
