The House of the Tale of the Toho

Experience the world of folk tales from the Tono region

This museum is related to the anecdotes and folklore of the Tono region written in Tono Monogatari (Tales of Tono) and its author, Kunio Yanagida.

The museum has the “Folktales Storehouse” where visitors can learn about the world of folktales, the “Kunio Yanagida Exhibition Room” in the reconstructed Takazen Ryokan where Kunio Yanagida stayed, and the “Tono Theater” where visitors can enjoy folktales and local performing arts.

There is also a restaurant where visitors can taste local cuisine, making this a facility that can be enjoyed by both adults and children.

Exhibition Hall of Folklore Utilizing a Sake Storehouse

The Folktales Storehouse, a converted liquor storehouse, introduces visitors to the folk tales of the Tono region, allowing them to immerse themselves in the world of folktales in the spacious storehouse.

Using paper cutouts, illustrations, and video images, visitors can enjoy tales of the Zashiki Warashi, the snow woman, and others.

In addition, there is a picture book corner and a video library, making it a place for children and adults of all ages to enjoy.

Tracing the Footsteps of the Father of Folklore

At the Kunio Yanagida Exhibition Hall, the building of the former Takazen Ryokan (a representative inn in Tono at that time) where Kunio Yanagida stayed has been relocated, and visitors can learn about his life and achievements.

The Tokyo house where Kunio Yanagida spent the last years of his life with his wife has also been relocated and can be visited as the former Kunio Yanagida Retreat House with tasteful decorations reflecting Yanagida’s tastes, allowing visitors to experience the world of the father of folklore.

Encounter storytelling and performing arts
